Local Area InformationRedhill Fynbos Private Nature Reserve
The Redhill area behind Scarborough is predominantly privately owned land and access is restricted to permit holders. The following permits can be obtained from Mickey's Mousetrap:
Annual permit: R30 per person
Day permit: R8 per person
The new path, starting at the top of Klipstraat has recently been opened. It is a more interesting and less strenuous route than the old route, which has now been closed. Stakes with yellow markers will indicate the new route until it is well worn and cairns have been erected.
Cape of Good Hope section of the Table Mountain National Park
The reserve has spectacular scenery, magnificent fynbos vegetation and fascinating historical landmarks.
The British Isles has 1500 plant species in 310 000 square kilometres, but the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve contains approximately 1200 species of plant on 78 square kilometres, which includes 53 Restios and about 38 Ericas. Remarkable isn’t it?
Wildlife is not as plentiful as other parks, however Baboon, Bontebok and Ostriches are regularly encountered. Other antelope which can be encountered are; the Eland, Red Hartebees, Klipspringer, Grey Duiker, Vaal Rhebok and Grysbok. A glimpse of a Mountain Zebra, an otter or a lynx is truly special encounter.
The Table Mountain National Park “Green Card is an annual pass that allows unlimited access for individuals, couples and families to all reserves within the Park. The initial cost is soon offset by what it would cost for regular entrance fees.
Many opportunities exist within the park for hiking, cycling, surfing, fishing, scuba diving, swimming and land based whale watching during the spring months. Picnic facilities are available at Bordjiesrif and Buffelsbaai (Be Aware of Baboons).
Boulders Penguin Colony
Boulders penguin colony, situated just south of Simon's Town, is home to a growing colony of the vulnerable African Penguin. These penguins are easily viewed by visitors to the colony.
Bird species too, are not very numerous, but the fynbos contains a number of endemics, such as the orange-breasted sunbird, protea canary, Cape rockjumper, etc. Several birds of prey occur in the fynbos biome, including the Cape eagle owl, black eagle, rock kestrel, etc.
