Ancient city of Bodrum (Halicarnassus) is on the Gulf of Gökova (southwest coast of Turkey) in Anadolu (Asia Minor). It was settled by Carians earlier than 1000 B.C. Carians, a non-Indo-European people, had settled in the area bounded on the north by the Buyuk Menderes river (ancient name is Maeander), and on the east by Lycia and Phrygia. Though its rugged coast line had many good harbors, difficulty of communication with the plateaus of the interior directed most of Carian commerce along the Buyuk Menderes tributaries toward the northwest. The area was known in antiquity for its figs, ships, wool, textiles and other luxury items.

The carians wrote their language in a derivative Greek alphabet. Ruled by local dynasts, they were noted for their warlike nature, often serving as mercenaries. During the 8th century B.C. they were pirates. The conquests of Cyrus the Great in 546-545 placed all area under Persian control. Under the Persian Empire, Caria was a separate satrapy, which revolted with the Ionians, who settled in the west coast of Anadolu around 1000 B.C., in 499, which was finally put down at the battle of Lade in 494. After the Persian defeat at Mycale (479), several Carian cities including Halicarnassus joined the Delian League in c.455 B.C., but came again under Persian domination after the peace of Antalcidas in 387 B.C.

In the 4th century B.C. Caria was first ruled by the Hellenizing dynasts Hecatomnus and Mausolus of Halicarnassus, then again controlled by Persia until freed by Alexander the Great in 334. Alexander the Great stormed Halicarnassus, which never fully recovered thereafter.

Under the Carian Mausolus (d.353), a Persian satrap, Halicarnassus reached its greatest prosperity; the Mausoleum ( one of the seven wonders of the antiquity), built by his widow, made city world-renowned.

The participation of Queen Artemisia I of Halicarnassus, a vassal of Persia, in the Battle of Salamis is described by Herodotus, a native of the city.

Carian cities changed hands among Seleucids, Antigonids, and Ptolemies during the Hellenistic period until 129 B.C., when Caria was incorporated into the Roman provinces of Asia. The large sites of Alinda, Alabanda, Mylasa, and Stratonikeia reveal Hellenistic and Roman monuments.
