Surrended by olives's camps and dominated by a peacefull atmosphere that marks the valley around, "Il Sole del Sodo" is costituted by an old main house of the end of nineteen century with five duoble rooms and by 6 cousy appartements made cleverly from the old stable.

The city Virgil wanted founded by mythical Dardanus, was probably a fortified Umbrian city, passed to the etruscan between the 8th. and the 7th centuries b.c. Of these it became an important Luvumony.

Cortona fluorinshed during the Comuni period and under the domain of Ranieri-Casali.

Built on the spur of the Monte Sant'Egidio, Cortona is surrended by powerfull walls, smoothed down by centuries and winds, along which the ancient gates open in correspondence to the roads coming up from thevalley. Cortona's Etruscan power is witnessed by the still standing imposing segments of the city walls. Several Etruscan tombs were found in the valley. Very rich archaelogical findings are exhibited in the Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca in Palazzo Casali,foremost the renowned Etruscan lamp of the 5th century BC. On the top of the hill dominates the Medici Fortress. Immediately below the fortress is the recostructed Sanctuary of Santa Margherita from which descend the city steep streets,paved with lerge stone slabs.Of high praise is the civilian architecture with Medieval and Renaissance buildings. Splendid the many churchs, from the Romanesque-Gothic of Sant'Agostino and San Francesco, to the Renaissance jewels of Santa Maria delle Grazie al Calcinaio and Santa Maria Nuova,to the quiet church of San Niccolò.

Cortona gave birth to th epainters Luca Signorelli and Pietro Berrettini, known as Pietro da Cortona. Gino Severini was also born here.

Exceptional is the pictorial patrimony of this art city preserved in the Museo Diocesano an the famous "Annunciazione" by Beato Angelico. Many other paintings are in the Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca in Palazzo Casali and in the sevral churches. Cortona is in the province of Arezzo, at a height of 650 metresa.s.l, right in the middle of Central Italy. The town is distant from Siena 45 minuts by car, from Florence 1 hour, from Perugia 30 minuts, from Assisi 1 hour, from Montepulciano 40 minuts.


If you are visiting Cortona in th emiddle of August you could enjoy the Sagra della Bistecca, an important manifestation of the local deliciuos steak tipical of the Valdichiana.
