Apartment in North Carolina, United StatesProperty DescriptionPelicans Rest is located on Cedar Island, a "Down East" fishing village in North Carolina known as the Gateway to the Outer Banks. The owner is from Belgium. Pelicans Rest is a nature lover's paradise overlooking Cedar Island Bay, Core Sound, and Pamlico Sound. The Atlantic Ocean and its beaches are visible on the horizon and accessible by ferry. The Suite is a 768 sq ft, self sufficient addition of our house that was completed in Dec 2004. It adjoins our house but is separated by insulated double doors that effectively kills the sound. We tend to stay on the other end of the house anyway and there is usually just the 2 of us. We might meet in the yard but we'll leave you alone as much as you want to be left alone. Includes:-Large family room with a panoramic view of the Bay. -Wood burning fireplace -Entertainment: Cable TV with HBO, VCR, DVD player, audio system, Including XM Satellite Radio! -Games and books (especially mysteries) -Kitchen (fully equipped, even some cooking staples) -Washer & Dryer See pictures on our web site: www.pelicansrest.net and at www.pbase.com/pelicans_rest/cedar_island_north_carolina Pelicans Rest is directly on the banks of Cedar Island Bay a mere stroll of 200’(60 meters) from your lodging. The property is very private so you can kick back and relax without interuptions. You have a panoramic view of the Bay and, in the distance, the Outer Banks. The Bay is very calm and has a very gentle slope to the deeper water, making it perfect for families. The property has about 500’ of private shoreline with a small sandy beach with chairs, umbrellas, outside fresh water shower, etc.. You have access to a 24’x40’ (7x13 meter) swimming pool. Swimming (Bay and fresh water pool), boating, fishing, kayaking, wind surfing, and bicycling are available. We have yard games available including, horseshoes, petanque/boules, and badminton The one major road on the Island is lightly used (except for 10 minutes after the ferry arrives!) so walks and bike rides on the Island are practical. Less than a mile away is the beach of Pamlico Sound that is great for walks and swimming at anytime. We have a collection of books and games in several languages (English, French, Italian…) in case we have a rainy day.Included are cable TV’s, VCR’s and DVD players and we will share our collection of videos with you. We even have XM Satellite Radio.We love gardening so you can make yourself at home in the Greenhouse or the vegetable garden...we have spare shovels!!! If you’re into plants, start the day by touring the greenhouse and grounds to see what is blooming. Feel free to dead-head any flowers that are beyond their prime! Danièle and Barbara, her assistant, are transforming the 5 acres into a series of garden "rooms". Many of the plants and ornamentation are for sale and sharing of cuttings is possible, Bird Feeders are placed around the property for your enjoyment. Cedar Islanders make their living from the sea so the seafood cannot be any fresher. We will assist you in obtaining the catch of the day before it is put on trucks to the big cities at high prices. During shrimp season, the view of dozens of boats working all night is amazing. Then, the best part is you can go buy the shrimp that were just caught as they are unloaded! Or, catch your own! Frequently we gather clams right in our backyard or put out crab traps. Depending on the season, sports fishing can also make for a nice dinner. Since the Island is far away from industry, the sky is crystal clear making for “Carolina Blue� skies in the day and a milky way of stars at night that seem close enough to touch. We speak English, French and Italian. * Has a Pool * Close to a Beach * Pets are allowed * Children are allowed Additional Information About Airport Information The closest airport (1 1/2 hours by car) is New Bern (EWN)). It is a small airport serviced by US Air Shuttle with flights from Charlotte, North Carolina. The closest big airport (4 hours by car) Raleigh (RDU). The closest true International airports (6 hours by car) are Charlotte (CLT) or Washington Dulles (IAD) (8 hours by car) About Local Restaurants The one restaurant serves the freshest possible seafood at very inexpesive prices (we ate there last night for $35 for 2 and had the most expensive main course). They also have non-seafood items. About Walking The one major road on the Island is lightly used (except for 10 minutes after the ferry arrives!) so walks and bike rides on the Island are practical. Less than a mile away is the beach of Pamlico Sound that is great for walks and swimming at anytime. About Ferries Pelicans Rest is 1 mile from the North Carolina Ferry that takes vehicles and passengers to and from Occracoke and then on to Hatteras. There are small ferries that take passengers to the very nearby Outer Banks ocean. About Beaches We’ve found a fantastic passenger ferry service from the next town over that for $10/person, round trip, will whisk you across Core Sound to an almost deserted portion of the Outer Banks where you can enjoy the Atlantic surf. The 15 min ride is itself fantastic and the view from where he drops you (called Drum Inlet, across from Atlantic, NC) is beautiful…at most there will be a few surf fishermen. Surf fish, shell, swim or just bake in seclusion on the Outer Banks! About Fishing Cedar Island is a fishing viallage so fish abound. Local guides are fantastic at finding the fish and are very reasonable priced. Surf fishing is very close by. Flounder are caught right in front of Pelicans Rest. Dig your own clams in front and set your own crab pots. Local Area InformationHorseback riding on the beach (guided rides only) is available at a nearby stable at very reasonable rates.Local guides are available for fishing and hunting, in season. These men were born and raised on the Island and know all of the good places. They are very affordable. Passenger ferry to a deserted portion of the Outer Banks for secluded surf fishing, sunning, shelling or napping! Fantastic photo opportunities including from duck blinds! Property Information
