Property Description

Quiet, simple, comfortable accommodation in 4-bed chalets with spacious shared amenities only meters away from the gates of Fiordland National Park and World Heritage Area. We offer also a self-contained cottage sleeping up to 4 people, and a twin/double with ensuite. Bottom sheets are provided, guests bring their own pillows, bedding and towels (can be hired at a charge).

We are a non-profit community enterprise dedicated to providing outdoor adventure and education opportunities to the community and visitors to the area. Surrounded by pristine southern beach forest, we are off the beaten tourist track and are often pleasantly quiet during December and January.

Please note we are quite remote (get away from that cell phone beep) and the closest grocery shops, restaurants and fuel is available in Te Anau (66km), Manapouri (46km) and Tuatapere (55km) - don't go hungry!

Local Area Information

An excellent base for exploring Fiordland, especially if you want to avoid the summer crowds. Very suitable for families and those with interest in nature, birdwatching and outdoors activities for all fitness levels and ages including walking, tramping, mountain biking, fishing, kayaking, caving, climbing, boating, swimming in the rivers, horse riding, hunting, jetboating - all at your doorstep or a short walk/drive away. Hire equipment is available for some of these activities. Good base for a trip to spectacular Doubtful Sound.

The pristine bush around Borland Lodge harbours several rare and endangered bird species, including yellowhead, kaka, crested grebe, and black billed gull on the river mouth.

Local historic and cultural attractions include the townships of Te Anau and Tuatapere, a nearby restoration project to revive traditional Maori food resources (Mahika Kai), a historic suspension bridge, a still operating historic power station, the unique Manapouri Underground Power Station etc (read more about nature, history and attractions below).
