Local Area Information

The Locality, Places of Interest and Activities

Locality

Le Jardin is a tiny hamlet surrounded by farmland and beautiful countryside on the outskirts of the village of Vezins in the vicinity of the Grand Lac la Sélune. Peace and tranquillity are to be expected, but with all the creature comforts catered for. Le Mont St.Michel can be seen from the orchard.

Ducey is our nearest town just 7km. It is host to the Montgommery chateau and the gardens are always a delight. A small supermarket is to be found here, as are a couple of banks (with ATM), a pizzeria, creperie, an excellent restaurant specialising in seafood, and a couple of bars. Not forgetting three boulangeries! For those who like walking, take a leisurely stroll along the River Sélune and try to spot a red Squirrel in the Bois D’Ardennes.

An English speaking Doctor is also based in a surgery in Ducey

Market day is Tuesday.

More information is to be found on http://www.cc-ducey.fr

St Hilaire du Harcouët is 9km away. The town stands at the point where the three regions of Normandy, Brittany and Western Loire meet. Whilst a lot larger than Ducey it has certainly not lost its charm, the pavement culture is much in evidence. Restaurants include a Cantonese and two Pizzerias, needless to say cider and calvados feature heavily in the traditional menus.

The supermarket chains E.LECLERC and Champion have outlets here.

The market day is Wednesday and is the largest in the area.

A local vet is au fait with the latest "pet scheme" requirements for those returning to the UK with pets.

Places of Interest

Avranches is a short drive away, St.James, Dinan, Fougères, St Malo, Villedieu-les-Poêles and Rennes are all readily accessible.

Avranches has some wonderful streets for shopping, garden admirers and historians alike. The Jardin des Plantes, the Notre-Dame-des-Champs, the Mont Saint-Michel scrolls are displayed here in the summer in the splendid library of the Ancient Fund of Avranches. St. James is home to the American World War II cemetery. Dinan, with its imposing castle and medieval buildings has shops, cafes and restaurants in winding narrow cobbled streets, leading down to the quaint harbour. Whilst in the area St.Malo is well worth a visit, steeped in history and surrounded by wonderful sandy beaches. Just around the headland is Cancale, a must if you have a penchant for seafood. Fougères is another extremely interesting medieval town, and nearby is the Parc Floral de Haute Bretagne for the gardeners!

Villedieu-les-Poêles is famous for its copper workshops and museums. It is also home to the Zoo de Champrepus, with an excellent pets’ corner to keep the children amused.

Rennes is a large cosmopolitan city, so if the shopaholics are having withdrawal symptoms… however there is more to Rennes than just shops, the old part is medieval and worth a visit if in town.

Mont Saint-Michel delightful at any time, enchanting at night. The reason why it is the second most visited site in France is obvious to see.

Slightly further afield but easily managed in one day: The Normandy beaches, Arromanches and the Bayeux Tapestry

Activities

Base de Loisirs La Mazure aux Biards, a leisure and water sports activity centre. Sailing, wind surfing, canoeing, and on land: tennis, pétanque, and archery to name a few.
http://www.lamazure.com

Parc de Loisirs l'Ange Michel, around 30 activities including: aqua splash, quad biking, children’s amusement park, and bumper boats.
http://www.ange-michel-loisirs.com

Fishing. Coarse fishing is well catered for locally. A day ticket is available but a 2 week holiday permit for 30 Euros is better value, the permits are available from Ducey and St. Hilaire-du-Harcouët and are easy to obtain.

On the Lac de Vezins, Pike, Zander and Perch are the target of local fishermen, mainly because they eat them. However other fish such as Carp, Bream and Roach are possible.

From the Lac de Vezins towards the Barrage de Roche qui Bois is classed as a category 2 river and big Bream and Chubb are possible. Upstream of the barrage, through Ducey and towards the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel the river Sélune is a category 1 river and is fly-fished for Salmon and Sea Trout.

http://carperiverclub.ifrance.com has links to the Lac de Vezins

There are specialist Carp and Trout lakes in the area.

Cycling and Mountain Biking. The “Veloroutes. La Manche has 25 circular routes of 20km each. Le Jardin is situated on the bay of Mont Saint-Michel Veloroute.
La Manche Ă  VTT (mountain biking). There are 50 signposted circuits ranging from 11 to 45kms from the simple to the most difficult.

Dégustation. Normandy is renowned for its cheese and cider. Visit local "farm" shops to taste locally produced cheeses and cider based products. Whilst Calvados may be an acquired taste the fortified cider, Pommeau is lovely as an aperitif and the Cidre Bouché (slightly sparkling) makes a refreshing lunchtime drink.

Son et Lumière. During the summer months on Saturday night a spectacular sound and light show is held: " Les Féeriques de Montgothier".

Walking. We are fortunate in having some lovely walks around us: the woods near Ducey, (hopefully you’ll spot a red squirrel or two), the waterfalls at Mortain or the disused railway from St.Hilaire-du-Harcouët to Ducey (hopefully soon to be extended to Mont Saint-Michel) which has been converted into a greenway. It is possible, depending on the tide (and only if escorted) to walk across the bay to Le Mont Saint-Michel. There are plenty of Beaches from Genêts, (20kms the nearest), via Jullouville all the way along the coast to Granville. Granville is a popular resort. You can take a ferry across to the Island of Chausey or visit Jersey for the day.
