The peaceful tranquillity of the French countryside combined with easy access to some of the best beaches in Northern France make this area of Normandy a most desirable holiday location.

Nestling in the sand dunes, with a 5 minutes walk to 7km of sandy beach, you will find Hameau Tranquille.

Modern well equipped holiday cottages, heated and in an ideal location for the perfect holiday at any time of year.

South-west of Cherbourg, between Les Pieux and Barneville-Carteret, the cottages are approached via winding country roads, through the village of Surtainville and on towards the coast.

Built early in the 1990s, the cottages are of a typical Normandy style under a high sloping roof. Sleeping 4 or 5 people, typically the main doors of the cottage open into a large lounge with kitchen and dining area, two bedrooms and shower room. Heating for the cooler season is via electric heaters, and as the cottages are very well insulated keeping warm is never a problem.

Outside there is a garden area with rotary clothes line, barbecue and garden furniture, an area for children to play and ample space for parking. Some cottages have bikes and body boards available.

Duvets and pillows are supplied. Guests are required to bring their own duvet covers, sheets, pillow slips, towels and tea towels.

Most noise in this area comes from the surf or the farmers working in the fields. No street lights so beautiful starry nights and sunsets so colourful they are indescribable.

Local Area Information

Closest villages are:

Surtainville- a small village, with only a couple of shops, Boulangerie and Epicerie, adequate for every day needs. A lake with play park and a skate board area is a few minutes walk from the village centre. The pizza van visits on a Thursday from 18.30.

During the summer the buvette, a lake side café, is open serving grills and of course “moules frites�.

Barneville-Carteret- here you will find the marina well known for its fish restaurants and hotels. Market day is Saturday morning in Barneville and Thursday in Carteret. Also the Tourist Train to the market at Portbail on a Tuesday leaves from Carteret at 09.15.

There is a daily boat trip to Jersey. But don’t forget your Passport!

Les Pieux- is a local market town with two large supermarkets and many small shops and banks, bars and restaurants with a Friday market where the sausage and frites make a great lunch.


Leisure facilities available in the area include golf, horse riding, swimming pool, water sports of every kind and tennis all within an easy driving distance from the cottages.

A little further afield are the Landing Beaches, Ste-Mere-Eglise, Mont-St-Michel and the Bayeux Tapestry.
