Cottage in Poitou Charentes, France

Property Description

This delightful, well equipped Charantais cottage is full of character and offers spacious accommodation for 6 people. Centrally heated. This family owned, south-west facing house is full of charm and is a continuation of our home in the UK. Outside there is a large private garden with a large tremendous terrace. Garden furniture and BBQ provided.

Previous visitors have described the house as, 'a very deceptively spacious and well equipped house in a superb location with lots for all ages to do’.

About Weather/Climate/Temperature The Charante Maritime is well known for its exceptional sunshine record (over 2,400 hours per year), mild climate and tranquil way of life. From the end of May to end of September the temperature escalates to around 35 degrees and then drops away to a good mid 20's. During the winter we have blue skies, harsh frosts and many log fires!About Transport A car is needed are the public transport is not good. We are located rurally; having said that we are just 1 mile from the nearest village, 5 miles from the nearest town with major supermarkets and 20 minutes from the nearest major town and motorway. The sea and bathing beaches are just 15 minutes away in RoyanAbout BeachesThe nearest beach is in Royan about 15 minutes drive away, for body boarding we go to the La Grand Cote which is about 30 minutes away, or to Ille D'Oleron which is not much furtherAbout Airport InformationThe nearest airport is La Rochelle, about an hour away. Bordeaux is 1hr 30mins away and Poitiers or Nantes is around 2 hours awayAbout Children ActivitiesThere is plenty to do for children we have the beaches near-by, a local village Meursac has a fun pool with a chute open from June to End of August. La Palmyre Zoo is 30 minutes away; a great day out! Historic Saintes with the Romain Amphitheatre and town is 20 minutes away.About Family ActivitiesAgain visit La Palmyre, or take the 'bac' from Royan to Le Verdon; parents experience the Bordeaux wineries and then finish off on the beach at Souillac Sur Mer to entertain the children. Take a day out in La Rochelle, look out for festivities happening all year round. Go to Royan and have an evening out, Bastille day brings an evening of fireworks on the beach.About Local AttrcationsLocal attractions include I'lle d'Oleron, Talmont - a picturesque village, Brouage a small village built on stilts on the salt marshes, La Palmyre Zoo, towns of Saintes, Cognac, and Royan are within 45 minutes away. Take the Bac to the other side of the Gironde and view the fantastic chateaux and their vines.About Local RestaurantsWe have a number of local restaurents. La Table in Meursac, 3 miles away La Vitorria in Saujon, 5 miles away, eat in or take away Italian others in local towns and tourist places are always very good.About WalkingAround the cottage we have a large wood that has walking tracks through. There are many old 'green roads' and quiet lane to walk or cycle around to get to know what is typically French.About Tourist BoardVisit the local tourist office is on http://www.ot-royan.fr/FRAccueil.asp?lg=UKAbout FerriesThe nearest ferry is from St Malo, 4 hours away. Caen is 5hrs 30mins and Calais is 8hrs. Crossing via the tunnel is also around 8hrs The roads are excellent to travel down and you very rarely arrive stressed, we take the tunnel on a regular basis

The safe beaches of Royan are just 15 minutes away and it is here that you will find shops cafes restaurants and bars.
Inland, life is much slower and relaxed and it is not hard to find medieval villages full of charm or quaint working ports full of local seafood.
There seems to be an endless list of places to visit and activities for all ages including days out to La Rochelle and Bordeaux. Why not take a wine trip to Cotes de Blaye use the bac ferry from Royan to Le Verdon to visit the Medoc or travel to the historic St Emillion and tour an estate or two.
For Families visit the many quiet beaches along the Gironde or on Ille D'Oleron or the quick exciting surf on the Cote Sauvage. How about climbing or clambering between pine trees up to 40ft high it's great fun At Jonzac there is Les Antilles for those rainy days indoor swimming with wave machine etc
Meursac the local village just 3 miles away has a baker butcher charcuterie and restaurant leisure facilities include an outdoor swimming pool with chute
Close to the local beaches at Royan and 30 minutes drive to the ocean waves on the Atlantic Coast and Ile de lOleron
Within 10 mins drive is the attractive town of Saujon offering bars restaurants range of shops and supermarkets as well as a comprehensive leisure centre with swimming pool and tennis
Places of interest within easy traveling time include The local seaside destination of Royan and its pretty little sister town of St Georges de Didonne

Nearby La Palmyre Zoo is a great day out for all the family Saintes visit the Roman Amphitheatre take a boat trip on the Charente and take in some great local shops and restaurants. Talmont a very pretty small town with a 12th century church overlooking the sea; Mornac an arty village with a small port; Brouage very interesting village full of art and history built on stilts within the salt marshes
La Rochelle superb walled town with attractive harbour chic shopping and many open air restaurants Ille d'Oleron having both wonderfully quiet and exhilarating beaches with Atlantic breakers
Cognac visit the brandy distilleries of Martel Courvoisier and Hine And there's much much more just ask
