Le Grand Lieu, Villiers Le Roux
Le Grand Lieu is the last property on the edge of the tiny village of Villiers Le Roux. The village is surrounded by farm land and pretty countryside, ideal for walking, cycling or just relaxing. This is also an ideal base from which to explore the many varied and interesting sights and leisure activities of the Poitou Charentes region. In the centre of the village is a small, friendly bar/restaurant, which serves good quality home cooking. The menus are really very good value.
There is no shop in our village, but the nearby village of Villefagnan (about four minutes by car) has a good selection of small shops and two small supermarkets. Also in Villefagnan is a riding stables and a pretty lake with a sandy beach, and children’s play area. A separate area is set aside for fishing and day tickets are available.
Aire de Rejallant, Condac (Nr. Ruffec - about ten minutes by car) is a very attractive leisure area by the river Charente. There is a millpond and weir with small islands in the river, linked by wooden bridges. There is a sandy beach area, fishing and picnic tables under the trees During the summer season, there are canoes for hire and a bar and restaurant.
For those wishing to venture further afield, the choice vast. The nearest large town is Angouleme (about 25 minutes by car). Here there are a number of large hypermarkets on the edge of the town, and the magnificent cathedral of Saint-Pierre, the ramparts and the Fine Arts and Archaeological Museums in the town centre. For motor sports enthusiasts, there is the Tour of the Ramparts car rally each September. Just outside town is the recreation ground of Saint Yrieix with windsurfing, sailing, bathing and fishing. Sailboards and bicycles and available for hire.
Confolens has a mediaeval bridge across the river Vienne, a number of churches dating from the 12th, 13th and 15th centuries, a 12th century ruined keep and the International Folklore Festival, held around the 15th August each year.
Cognac, the birthplace of Francois I, is known the world over, thanks to its famous eau de vie, and a visit to the distilleries is not to be missed.
Futuroscope, the park of the moving image, is situated at Jaunay-Clan, seven kilometres north of Poitiers. The sights include a trip into the future guided by Christopher Columbus, the Kinemax cinema with giant 600 square metre screen, the dynamic cinema where spectators' seats react to the picture and the 360-degree cinema-in-the-round. Fireworks and laser show at sunset (weekends only outside the high season.)
