Kalkan is an unspoilt small harbour town on the Turkish Mediterranean coast Once an Ottoman Greek Fishing Village called Kalamaki Kalkan has a tiny beach Many people prefer to swim from one of the 5 Beach Clubs in the area two of which run a free taxi service Sandy beaches are not far away at Kaputash which may be reached using a dolmus the local bus300 steps lead down to the beach Patara beach has 10 miles of golden sands a small charge is made for its use The picturesque harbour is a safe haven for visiting yachts and boats and local fishermen still catch fresh fish from the harbour The nearest airport is Dalaman 15 hours Kalkan overlooks the Mediterranean and is enclosed by a backdrop of mountains The town is made up of narrow cobbled streets leading down to the harbour and is full of small interesting shops and restaurants offering all types of cuisine as well as traditional Turkish menus The town has a small clinic a doctor a number of dentists and pharmacists a bank with cash point and post office There is also an internet cafe In the centre of Kalkan you will find local taxis and buses plus coaches travelling as far as Istanbul There are many agencies that will arrange tours for you and also car hire companies It is an ideal location for water sports including snorkelling and diving You may wish to hire a jeep to explore further afield including the mountain villages trout farms and restaurants
