Local Area InformationThere’s so much to do in this area that it’s hard to know where to start. Here’s a selection though to whet the appetite:
Canon Hall Country Park and Open Farm is always worth a visit and there’s a museum here too.
Take a ride on a real narrow gauge steam train at the Kirklees light railway.
Go underground at the National Coal Mining Museum. This was a working mine until relatively recently. It’s a fantastic experience for both adults and children and being a National Museum, it’s completely FREE to visit!
Pugney’s Park and Water Activity Centre is nearby for the water babies!
There are 2 nine-hole golf courses within a short drive (no pun intended), with 18 hole courses slightly further afield.
Eureka Children’s Museum is science-oriented, with lots of interactive fun for the enquiring young mind.
Explore the history of film, photography, radio and television at the National Media Museum – it’s FREE to visit!
The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is just up the road and is free to enter.
Holmfirth is just a short drive away. Famous as the setting for Last of the Summer Wine, this old market town is well worth a visit in its own right.
Dearne Lea Tea Room serves good food and the best home-made ice cream in the history of the universe! This is also a working dairy farm and if you time your visit right you can see the cows being milked at no charge.
The historic city of York is 50 minutes away, as is Haworth – the heart of Bronte Country.
The area around Denby Dale is criss-crossed by lots of Public Footpaths through rolling countryside and dense woodland, making Cuckstool Cottage a great base for keen Ramblers or Geochaching enthusiasts.
We keep lots of information and leaflets in the cottage on things to do and places to visit locally.
The White Hart in the village does pub grub.
The Palace Tandoori is great for Indian food. It doesn’t have a drinks licence, but you can take your own alcohol.
The Aagrah is another decent curry-house. Slightly more expensive and they do serve drinks.
A short drive away there are the Volare (Mediterranean cuisine) and La Dolce Vita (Italian). Both of these offer very good food and good value – especially on ‘specials’ nights.
If you fancy pushing the boat out a bit farther, try the Dunkirk or the 3 Acres.
