A nature lover's paradise, only 90 minutes drive from Cape Town, with a wonderful climate and that laid-back West Coast way of life. Whether you want a relaxing break, or plan to sample some of the varied activities on offer, our four comfortable, fully-equipped self-catering cottages overlooking the busy fishing harbour and beautiful St Helena Bay are your home from home during your stay.
ACCOMMODATION
The accommodation at Elm Tree consists of four fully-equipped self-catering cottages, each one individually decorated in a bright and breezy West Coast style.
Oystercatcher Cottage was the first guest accommodation built at Elm Tree and remains the most popular. Handmade Batavian floor tiles and the bamboo shaded stoep keep it cool during the summer months. The accommodation consists of two twin bedrooms downstairs, each having wardrobes, chests of drawers and reading lamps. There is a cute upstairs loft room, with a double bed, reached by a ladder and looking down onto the double volume lounge. The open plan living area downstairs includes a dining alcove and a well stocked kitchen. There is also a spacious bathroom with shower.
The Tank was purpose built and constructed to look like a farm reservoir and is spacious inside. Its circular design is refreshing, cool and comfortable, with chunky poplar beams, the glow of varnished wood and cool handmade floor tiles. Two bedrooms occupy the top floor of the Tank, one twin bedroom and the main bedroom with a queen sized bed and double doors onto a little balcony from which to enjoy the view and catch the sea breeze. Downstairs you will find the large open plan living, dining and kitchen area, plus a spacious bathroom with shower.
The Stables are the most recent addition at Elm Tree and consist of two adjoining cottages, The Cow Shed and The Hen House. Each cottage has individual decor and is styled on the fisherman's cottages you will see all around the area. The accommodation consists of one twin bedroom, a bathroom with shower and a large open plan living and dining area with kitchen.
All cottages are fully equipped with bedding and towels. There are fans to cool you down in the heat of the summer, while blankets and hot water bottles are supplied for the odd chilly evening and heaters are also available on request. Kitchens are well stocked with crockery, cutlery, fridge/freezer, microwave, kettle, tea-towels etc and there is a TV in the living room. We also provide complimentary tea and coffee to refresh you after your trip. The cottages each have a private built-in braai (barbecue) and stoep (veranda) with views over Sandy Point Harbour and St Helena Bay.
Local Area InformationST HELENA BAY
St Helena Bay is a major fishing centre and popular tourism destination, particularly during the spring wild flower season. Ancient granite hills and boulders form a backdrop to the village and offer stunning views of the bay and across to the Piketberg mountains, while the white sandy beaches are perfect for beachcombing and even a refreshing dip in the Atlantic.
Elm Tree Guest Cottages are attractively and conveniently situated on our smallholding or 'farmette', with its growing family of geese, ducks, chickens, dogs and cats, just off the main road and within easy walking distance to the pretty beach at Hanna's Baai. It is a short stroll to the popular local restaurant and live music venue, De Palm. The St Helena Bay Centre, about one kilometre further down the road offers a variety of shops, a petrol station, ATM machine and post office.
ACTIVITIES
The West Coast naturally lends itself to a relaxing getaway, but for those who want a bit more to do there is plenty to choose from in and around St Helena Bay. The area receives less cloud and rain than Cape Town, with more sunshine and milder temperatures, especially welcome during the winter months, making it a popular year-round destination.

- Heaviside's dolphins are found in large numbers at any time along with schools of dusky and common dolphins
- Birdwatching, including white pelicans, flamingoes and the increasingly threatened African black oyster catchers
- Spring flowers from midwinter to the end of spring, the West Coast bursts into brilliant colour.
- The West Coast National Park - in Spring the Postberg section of the park is opened for flower viewing and beautiful Langebaan Lagoon is a mecca for birdlife and watersports.
- Wine routes nearby include the Swartland Wine Route and the Olifants River Wine Route.
- The West Coast is famous for its seafood, particularly snoek, crayfish in season, mussels and oysters as well as the local delicacy 'bokkoms', salted, dried fish.
- A variety of water sports are to be found all around the coastline.
- There are plenty of golf courses to choose from.
- Hiking trails in the area follow the coastline.
- Horse riding is offered around Langebaan, Vredenburg and Saldanha.
