La Lagartija is just around the corner from Casa de la Puerta Grande (see separate link)- and the two properties can also be rented out together to larger parties if desired.

Located in the picturesque oldest part of the village on the edge of the orange groves, the house is an upside-down house on three floors with the Master Bedroom, Living Room and Roof Terraces all having wonderful views over the orange orchards and the gorge. The house has retained its chestnut beams, colourful local tiles and copper sinks and is well also equipped with comfortable and good quality furnishing. La Lagartija also has its own orange orchard which can be used by tenants for picnics or splashing about in the paddling pool. In the right season the oranges (as many as you can eat) are free!

Local Area Information

Albunuelas is situated on the edge of its own dramatic gorge in the beautiful Lecrin Valley midway between the historic city of Granada (with its vibrant Moroccan quarter and the historic attractions of the Alhambra and the Generalife) and the Costa Tropical. Both are accessible within 30 minutes. Lanjaron, gateway to the mountainous Alpujarras (the highest villages in Spain - made famous by Chris Stewart's book 'Driving over Lemons') can be reached in about 20 minutes. In winter, skiing is available 45 minutes away at the Sierra Nevada ski resort.

The stunningly beautiful Lecrin Valley is deal for relaxation and perfect for walkers, fishermen, bird watchers & artists. The epic GR7 walk from Gibraltar to Istanbul passes the door and one of the GR7 markers can be seen upon the wall. The lush valley just beyond the house is rich with oranges, almonds, grapes, figs, pomegranates, persimmons, and prickly pears. In the spring the air is perfumed with orange and almond blossom. The higher slopes of the gorge abound with olives and the scent of wild herbs. The Moors christened this place the Valley of Joy.

The Lecrin Valley alone can provide more than enough variety to fill any holiday, but here is a taste of some other wonderful places which also lie within easy reach.

The dramatically situated coastal town of SalobreƱa, clinging to a rock with its castle perched on top, is a 35 minute drive away. The larger town of AlmuƱecar a few minutes further on has an interesting market on Friday mornings. Marina del Este has nice waterfront restaurants overlooking the harbour. More secluded beaches can be found around La Herradura. A little further on still lies the more cosmopolitan coastal town of Nerja with its famous caves. In the other direction along the Almeria Road lies the Cabo de Gato, a nature reserve of pristine sand-dunes, dramatic rocks and crystal waters, famous for its diving & snorkelling.

Historic Granada (with its vibrant Moroccan quarter and the attractions of the Alhambra and the Generalife) are a 30 minute drive. The spa town of Lanjarron, gateway to the Alpujarras (the highest villages in Spain) is 20 minutes.

The ancient walled city of Cordoba with the Mesquita, can be reached in 2 hours along the castle-studded Route of the Caliphs. Alhama de Granada, perched on a cliff with its Roman baths & the warm waters of Lake Bermejales for swimming nearby, is a drive of about 45 minutes & Gaudix with its weird rock formations & cave dwelling troglydites is 1hr.
