Europe Storm Kills 50

Western Europe has been slammed with a huge storm bringing harsh wind and rain, as well as rough seas, across the land. The Atlantic storm, which is being called Xynthia, devastated Spain and France on Saturday night and early Sunday morning, while it stretched from the Netherlands down to Portugal and reached inland to Germany. The storm has left at least 50 dead and over 1 million homes without power, while there are flood warnings in effect for the UK.

A majority of the deaths (45) have been in France, where winds would reach up to 150km per hour and waves as high as 8 metres battered its coast, causing flooding and residents to climb as high as they could. The nation’s Prime Minister Francois Fillon said they will formally declare this storm a natural disaster, which will free up funds to help with the rebuilding of communities. France was warned about the storm, but they didn’t think it would be this disastrous, he continued, adding that he and his son managed to save his disabled 83-year-old mother, who was sleeping on the ground floor.

Spain has reported that an elderly woman died on Saturday after a wall collapsed, and two men died on Sunday when a falling tree hit their car. A 10-year-old boy is said to have been killed in Portugal by a falling branch, while flood waters continued to rise. In Germany, a motorist and woman were killed by falling trees as well, along with 60-year-old man in Belgium.

As for the UK, residents and travelers have been warned about severe flooding, which could put even more lives at risk everywhere. The Thames Barrier in London was risen to twice its height in just a day. Train services to and from London were disrupted, while flights have been disrupted as well, with Air France canceling 100 out of 700 flights at their Paris Charles de Gaulle airport hub.
