Yotel to Open Time Square Pod Hotel

Betty Morgan

The “pod” hotels operator Yotel is planning to open one of their hotels in Time Square. The company, which was started by YO! Sushi founder Simon Woodroffe, will be making the rooms twice as big as the ones they have in the Heathrow, Gatwick and Schiphol airports in Europe.

Yotel typically offers stays of least 4 hours to travelers who need a place to relax while they wait for their flight. This is a great feature for businesspeople who have to wait for connecting flights, as they are modeled after first-class airline cabins. The price for a 4-hour stay is about £25 depending on the type of room booked, which includes Premium, Standard and Twin cabins, as well as Accessible cabins that travelers need to call about to book.

However, Yotel will be offering overnight stays at this new hotel in New York, as Woodroffe and his partner, Gerard Greene, always planned. The price for these stays will be $200-$250 a night. This hotel will be opened next year in a 25-story tower with 669 rooms, which they believe will be the biggest hotel opening in New York in 2011.

A Yotel press release describing the cabins says that are true havens of calm. They will have luxury bedding, relaxing purple mood lighting, the company’s signature techno wall with a flat screen television, rejuvenating monsoon rain showers and complimentary Wi-Fi. The rest of the hotel will feature a restaurant and bar, business lounges, and an outside terrace. It will be managed by 200 workers, excluding franchised food and beverage operations.
