German Gang Raids Berlin Grand Hyatt Hotel Poker Tournament
Damian HagertyArmed robbers, thought to be a German gang, raided a luxury hotel in central Berlin while it hosted a poker tournament. The attack is said to have happened at 1:30pm GMT on Saturday at the Grand Hyatt. According to one report, the gang was armed with hand grenades and assault rifles. They are said to have made off with the jackpot of £726,000 ($1.1 million or €800,000).
According to reports, 4 robbers entered the hotel while 2 of their companions kept watch. Police spokesman Carsten Mueller said that the robbers were cloaked. The poker tournament was being broadcast live by n-tv, a private television station, which caught images of the chaos. The tournament, which was organized by the European Poker Tour, got going again 4 hours later, according to German media.
A number of people were injured during the panic, but none of the injuries were serious panic. There were about 1,000 poker players at the 5-day tournament, which started on Wednesday, but many of them had already dropped out.
Heidi Vogt, a spokeswoman for the police, said that a number of masked and armed individuals went into the Grand Hyatt hotel and ran off with the money. She wouldn’t say how much the robbers got away with, but the amount was revealed on the organizer’s website.
One of the participants, Tobias Reinkemeier, described the panic that broke when the robbers raided the hotel. He heard them scream armed robbery, and no one knew what was happening, he continued. Then everyone panicked, jumping under tables before trying to escape via the emergency exit, Reinkemeier added.
