Hudson hero to retire from US Airways
adminUS Airways pilot Chelsey Sullenberg, is now scheduled to retire after completing 30 years of flying. Sullenberg, 59, is known for his recent Hudson River landing. Remembering the event, all 150 passengers and crew on board the flight survived the historic emergency landing in Hudson. It was said that a flock of Canadian geese were struck at the plane’s engines, forcing it to make an urgent landing.
After the historic event, Sullenberg authored and released a book called ‘Brace for Impact’. He then became a member of the US Airways’ flight safety management last September 2009. Currently, Sullenberg is busy promoting his new book ‘Highest Duty’.
Captain Sullenberg flew his final flight US Airways 1167 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to US Airways home base at Charlotte Douglas Airport. Together with him is First Officer Jeff Skiles, who is also his co-pilot during the famed Hudson landing. The flight took just under two hours and arrived 17 minutes ahead of schedule.
He is scheduled to formally retire at a private gathering with co-pilots and other US Airways staffs. Sullenberg plans to spend more time with his family after retirement, says US Airways Pilots Association spokesperson.
One of the attendants on board the heroic Flight 1549, Doreen Welsh, 59, is also scheduled to retire. She joined US Airways’ predecessor airline at the age of 19 in 1970. In January, Sullenberg, Welsh and three other cabin crew members, together with several passengers of the infamous Hudson flight, had made a reunion earlier in New York.
