About Anglesey
Anglesey's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is where most of the island's holiday cottages sit. The designation wraps almost the entire coast, from the sea-cliffs and lighthouse at South Stack, round the dunes and the tidal island of Llanddwyn, to the quiet harbours of the north. Designated in 1967 and covering around 221 square kilometres, roughly a third of Anglesey, it holds about 1,160 of the self-catering cottages on the island.
The Anglesey Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
This is a coastal designation: it follows most of the island's 125-mile coastline and adds the two upland outliers of Holyhead Mountain and Mynydd Bodafon. Designated in 1967 and managed by the Isle of Anglesey County Council, the AONB (in Welsh, Ardal o Harddwch Naturiol Eithriadol Ynys Môn) packs a lot of variety into a small space: the high sea-cliffs of Holy Island, the wide surf beaches of the west, the dunes and forest of Newborough, the old copper and shipping coast of the north, and the soft, sheltered shores along the Menai Strait. For all the protection, it stays a working landscape of farmland and small harbours.
Where to stay in the Anglesey AONB
The cottages cluster around the coast, and most of the island's holiday towns sit inside or beside the AONB:
- Benllech: the east coast's big, family-friendly Blue Flag sands
- Trearddur Bay: a string of rocky coves and clear water on Holy Island, popular for watersports
- Rhosneigr: the west-coast surf and kitesurf village, backed by dunes
- Beaumaris: the handsome Georgian town on the Menai Strait, with its medieval castle
- Moelfre: a pretty fishing village with a shingle cove and a long lifeboat history
- Cemaes Bay: the most northerly village in Wales, a sheltered harbour on the heritage coast
- Amlwch: the old copper port on the rugged north coast
- Newborough: the gateway to Newborough Forest and Llanddwyn Island in the south-west
- Holyhead and Rhoscolyn: the port town below Holyhead Mountain and the quiet coves to its south
- Menai Bridge: the Strait-side town at the island's gateway, under Telford's suspension bridge
Beaches and nature reserves
Anglesey's beaches are the main event, and five hold a Blue Flag in 2025: Benllech, Llanddona, Llanddwyn, Porth Dafarch and Church Bay (Porth Swtan). The showpiece is in the south-west, where Llanddwyn Beach runs for miles below Newborough Forest out to the tidal island of Ynys Llanddwyn; on the east coast, the tidal sands of Red Wharf Bay empty for half a mile at low water. For wildlife, South Stack is an RSPB reserve of sea-cliffs and seabirds below its lighthouse, Cemlyn Bay holds a tern colony behind its shingle ridge, and the dunes and saltmarsh of Newborough Warren are a National Nature Reserve. Off the south-east tip, Puffin Island sits beyond Penmon Point.
Walking the Anglesey coast
The Anglesey Coastal Path, part of the Wales Coast Path, runs for about 125 miles right around the island, almost all of it inside the AONB, so a cottage anywhere on the coast puts you on the route. It mixes cliff-top walking with dune, beach and quiet lane, and it is well-waymarked the whole way.
