About Clwydian Range and Dee Valley
The Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) covers most of upland Denbighshire, and the bulk of the protected area lies in this county. It runs from the heather-topped Clwydian hills in the north, over the high ground of Moel Famau, down to the wooded Dee Valley around Llangollen and Corwen. Designated in 1985 and extended in 2011 to take in the Dee Valley, it holds around 215 of the self-catering cottages in the county.
The Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
This is an inland, upland designation of roughly 390 square kilometres, and about four-fifths of it lies in Denbighshire. In Welsh it is Bryniau Clwyd a Dyffryn Dyfrdwy. The Clwydian Range was first protected in 1985 as a line of rounded, heather-clad hills above the Vale of Clwyd; in 2011 the area was extended south and east to add the steep, wooded Dee Valley around Llangollen and Corwen, and the name changed to match. It is led by Denbighshire County Council on behalf of a joint committee with Flintshire and Wrexham. Between the hilltops and the river it stays a working landscape of sheep pasture, moorland, market towns and old drovers' country.
Where to stay in the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley AONB
The cottages are spread through the hill villages and the Dee Valley towns, and most of Denbighshire's best-known inland places sit inside or beside the AONB:
- Llangollen: the riverside town on the Dee, the busy heart of the valley, below Castell Dinas Bran
- Ruthin: a handsome market town in the Vale of Clwyd, under the western flank of the range

Landscape and landmarks
The skyline belongs to Moel Famau, the highest of the Clwydian hills at about 554 metres, crowned by the ruined Jubilee Tower, begun in 1810 to mark the golden jubilee of King George III and never finished. Along the tops run a string of Iron Age hillforts, among them Penycloddiau, Moel Arthur and Foel Fenlli, ramparts thrown up more than two thousand years ago. South in the Dee Valley, the jagged ruin of Castell Dinas Bran stands on its steep hill above Llangollen, while the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site, designed by Thomas Telford and William Jessop and inscribed in 2009, carries the Llangollen Canal high above the River Dee. Just west of the town, the Horseshoe Falls is Telford's curved weir on the Dee that feeds the canal.
Walking the range
The big walk here is Offa's Dyke Path, the national trail that traces the old border between England and Wales. Through this area it follows the crest of the Clwydian Range and crosses the summit of Moel Famau by the Jubilee Tower, so a cottage in the hills or the Vale of Clwyd puts you within reach of one of Britain's best-loved long-distance routes. Lower down, the towpath of the Llangollen Canal and the paths of the Dee Valley give gentler walking between the villages.
