You’ll be just 350 metres from the centre of town, to visit the bustling market square. Time your visit right and you can browse the popular Friday craft and food market, too. History lovers won’t want to miss a trip to the evocative ruins of Helmsley Castle (0.5 miles) or take a scenic walk to Duncombe Park (1 mile), a grand stately home with beautiful grounds. For keen walkers and cyclists, Helmsley marks the start of both the Cleveland Way and Ebor Way. Head to Pickering (13 miles) to hop aboard a heritage line all the way to the coast at Whitby (30 miles). Other day trips include Castle Howard (13 miles) or the medieval marvels of York (24 miles). On arrival, you’ll pass through a handy hallway – perfect for boots, coats and drying off muddy paws – before heading into the inviting lounge. If you’d like to visit the North Yorkshire coast, hop on the 128 bus which travels to Scarborough with stops in Kirkbymoorside and Pickering along the way. The 31X bus route travels from York to Kirkbymoorside with stops in Shipton and Helmsley en route. Willow Cottage has a welcoming and homely living room.
