About Howardian Hills

The Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is a quiet band of low wooded hills in North Yorkshire, set between the moorland of the North York Moors and the flat farmland of the Vale of Pickering. It takes its name from Castle Howard, the grand 18th-century house and estate at its heart, and the landscape around it is one of estate woodland, arable fields and small villages of warm local stone. Designated in 1987 and covering about 204 square kilometres, it holds the cottages on this page.

The Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Designated in 1987 and now also branded as the Howardian Hills National Landscape, this is one of the smaller protected landscapes in England, covering about 204 square kilometres in North Yorkshire. It is a band of low, well-wooded hills that links the high ground of the North York Moors in the north with the broad, level Vale of Pickering. Much of its character comes from the great estates that shaped it, above all the Castle Howard estate, so it is a designed as well as a farmed landscape, a patchwork of mature estate woodland, arable fields, parkland and stone villages. It stays a working countryside of farms and small communities rather than a busy visitor honeypot, looked after through a partnership of local councils and landowners.

Where to stay in the Howardian Hills AONB

The cottages are scattered through the villages and the surrounding farmland, and most of the small stone settlements of the hills sit inside or beside the AONB:

  • Helmsley: the handsome market town on the northern edge, with a castle, a market square and walks up into the hills
  • Hovingham: an estate village of honey-coloured stone, home to Hovingham Hall
  • Ampleforth: a long village on a south-facing slope, known for its abbey and college
  • Slingsby: a quiet village with a ruined hall and a maypole on the green
  • Crayke: a hilltop village with a castle and long views south towards York
  • Terrington: a small village in the wooded country near Castle Howard
  • Nunnington: a peaceful village on the River Rye, beside Nunnington Hall

Landscape and landmarks

The centrepiece is Castle Howard, the vast baroque house begun in 1699 to designs by Sir John Vanbrugh, set in a landscape park of lakes, temples and a great mausoleum that gives the whole area its name. Around it spread the wooded hills themselves, a gentle, rolling country of estate plantations and beech hangers that feels enclosed and intimate after the open Moors to the north. The stone villages, places like Hovingham, Slingsby and Terrington, are built from the warm local limestone and sandstone and sit easily in this farmed parkland. To the east, near the village of Nunnington, Nunnington Hall is a mellow 17th-century manor house in the care of the National Trust, with walled gardens running down to the River Rye. The hills hold a clear position between the Moors and the Wolds, a low ridge of farmland and woodland bridging the two ranges of higher ground.

Walking the Howardian Hills AONB

Two long-distance routes cross the area, so a cottage almost anywhere in the hills puts you a short walk from a waymarked trail. The Centenary Way runs through on its route from York to Filey, threading past Castle Howard and over the wooded ridges, while the Ebor Way links York with Helmsley along the western side of the hills. Between them they make this gentle, sheltered country easy to explore on foot, on quiet lanes, field paths and woodland tracks, with regular views out to the Moors in the north and the Vale of Pickering below.
