Leave your shoes and coats in the hallway before continuing through to the lounge. With a large sofa and two armchairs this is a tranquil space in which to unwind in front of the roaring wood burner on a chilly evening and catch up on your favourite programmes on the Smart TV which includes Sky BT Sports and Netflix. Beyond the impressive conservatory offers the perfect place to relax with a good book or just soak in the stunning countryside views across the South Downs National Park. The well-equipped kitchen is located just off the lounge. Throw open the patio doors on a warm summer s morning and enjoy an informal breakfast at the kitchen table which seats four but which can be extended to seat eight or simply sit outside on the top terrace for a coffee and enjoy the view. A formal dining room for eight is located on the opposite side of the lounge and is a great space for family celebrations and a games room with a pool table and plenty of board games for an after-dinner family games evening. Just off the games room is a handy study that provides a quiet area for catching up on emails and the ground floor is completed with a handy utility room and a separate WC. Heading upstairs there are four bedrooms: two king-size rooms with impressive views and en-suite shower rooms a twin room and a single room with an additional trundle bed. These two bedrooms share the family bathroom. Outside there is a gas-fired BBQ for outdoor dining and multiple seating areas to choose from all of which enjoy the breath-taking views over the South Downs. Relax after an enjoyable day sightseeing and watching the sunset with a glass of fizz produced by one of the many local growers. A secret garden behind the property offers a quiet spot to sit under a wooden pergola and enjoy the peaceful views. There is also a garden gate which gives direct access to extensive woodland walks. Need to know: 4 bedrooms 2 king size, 1 twin, and 1 single (with an additional trundle bed). 3 bathrooms 1 with bath and WC, 2 en suite shower rooms with WC, 1 WC. About South Downs
The South Downs National Park is where many of West Sussex's holiday cottages sit. Designated in 2010 and fully operational from 2011, it is England's newest national park, a band of chalk downland and wooded greensand stretching across the south of the county. Covering about 1,627 square kilometres in all, from Winchester in the west to Eastbourne in the east, it takes in about 186 of the self-catering cottages on the West Sussex stretch.
The South Downs National Park
Designated on 31 March 2010 and fully operational from 1 April 2011, the South Downs is the youngest of England's national parks. Across West Sussex it runs as a broad belt of country: the open chalk ridge of the Downs themselves, the wooded sandstone of the western Weald around Midhurst and Petworth, and the river gaps where the Arun and the Rother cut through to the sea. It is run by the South Downs National Park Authority and, with around 108,000 people living within its boundary, it stays a working landscape of farms, sheep-grazed downland and small market towns as much as a protected one.
Where to stay in the South Downs National Park
The cottages cluster along the Downs and in the valley towns, and most of West Sussex's inland holiday bases sit inside the park:
- Arundel: the handsome town in the Arun gap, with its great castle and cathedral below the Downs
- Midhurst: a timbered market town in the wooded western Weald, near the ruins of Cowdray
- Petworth: a town of narrow streets and antique shops beside Petworth House and its deer park
- Storrington: a downland town at the foot of the escarpment, handy for the ridge walks
- Amberley: a thatched village in the Arun valley below the chalk
- Steyning: an old town under the Downs near the Adur gap
- Findon: a village tucked under Cissbury Ring, one of the great hillforts
- Bramber: a small village by the Adur with its ruined Norman castle
Landscape and landmarks
West Sussex holds some of the park's best-known sights. The chalk escarpment runs the length of the county, a steep north-facing wall of downland with wide views over the Weald, and the rivers break through it at Arundel, Amberley and Steyning. Arundel Castle, the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk, stands above the Arun and is one of the great houses of southern England. To the east, near the West Sussex border, Devil's Dyke is a deep dry valley and a famous viewpoint on the ridge above the Weald. The Iron Age hillforts of Cissbury Ring and Chanctonbury Ring crown the Downs above Findon and Steyning.
Walking the South Downs
The South Downs Way runs for about 100 miles along the chalk from Winchester to Eastbourne, and it is the only National Trail to lie wholly within a national park. It crosses West Sussex along the high ridge, so a cottage in Arundel, Storrington or Steyning puts the trail within easy reach of the door. The going is open and breezy, on grass and old droving tracks, with the long views north over the Weald and south to the sea that the Downs are known for.
