About Sussex Downs

The South Downs National Park is where many of East Sussex's holiday cottages sit. The old Sussex Downs is now part of this national park, which was designated in 2010 and fully operational from 2011, England's newest. In East Sussex it reaches its dramatic end where the chalk meets the sea at the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head. Covering about 1,627 square kilometres in all, from Winchester in the west to Eastbourne in the east, it takes in about 149 of the self-catering cottages on the East Sussex stretch.

The South Downs National Park

Designated on 31 March 2010 and fully operational from 1 April 2011, the South Downs is the youngest of England's national parks, and the former Sussex Downs landscape is part of it. Across East Sussex it runs as a high chalk ridge down to the coast, cut by the river valleys of the Ouse and the Cuckmere, and ends in the white cliffs east of the Cuckmere. It is run by the South Downs National Park Authority and, with around 108,000 people living within its boundary, it stays a working landscape of sheep-grazed downland, flint villages and old market towns as much as a protected one.

Where to stay in the South Downs National Park

The cottages cluster along the Downs and in the valley villages, and many of East Sussex's inland holiday bases sit inside the park:

  • Lewes: the county town in the Ouse gap, with its Norman castle and steep flint streets below the Downs
  • Alfriston: a pretty village in the Cuckmere valley, a classic walkers' base
  • East Dean: a downland village set just back from the Seven Sisters and Birling Gap
  • Ditchling: a historic village under Ditchling Beacon, one of the high points of the Downs
  • Westmeston: a small village at the foot of the escarpment near Ditchling Beacon
  • Berwick: a quiet village in the Cuckmere country with its painted church

Landscape and landmarks

East Sussex holds the most famous coast in the park. The Seven Sisters are a line of chalk cliffs rising and falling along the shore, with Beachy Head, the highest chalk sea-cliff in Britain, beyond them above Eastbourne. Between them the Cuckmere Haven is a meandering river mouth left undeveloped, one of the best-known views in the South of England. Inland, the chalk escarpment runs as a steep north-facing wall, topped by Ditchling Beacon, and the river Ouse cuts through it at Lewes. The painted church at Berwick and the long barrows and flint villages of the Cuckmere give the downland its quiet character.

Walking the South Downs

The South Downs Way runs for about 100 miles along the chalk from Winchester to Eastbourne, and it is the only National Trail to lie wholly within a national park. It reaches its finest stretch in East Sussex, where it climbs over the Seven Sisters between the Cuckmere and Birling Gap before dropping to Eastbourne, so a cottage in Alfriston, East Dean or Lewes puts the trail within easy reach. The going is open and breezy, on grass and old droving tracks, with the sea on one hand and the Weald on the other.
