The pretty village of Backbarrow is home to a number of attractions including Lakeland Motor Museum Cliffhanger Rooms and Bigland Barrow while the neighbouring village of Haverthwaite (1.5 miles) marks the start of the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway. Heading north Fell Foot Park lies at the southern end of Windermere (2.5 miles) with landmarks including the Lakes Aquarium Stott Park Bobbin Mill and Gummer s How (all within 3.5 miles). Windermere is a fabulous base for woodland walks or for taking a cruise across the lake. Heading south the popular market town of Ulverston is the birthplace of Stan Laurel and is home to the Laurel and Hardy Museum (7.5 miles) with the South Lakes Safari Zoo also nearby (10.5 miles). The entrance porch features original slate flooring and is a handy space for hanging up coats before entering the cosy and relaxing lounge. There are scenic walks from the front door down the river or onto the heights (great if you have a dog) which has stunning views across the Morecambe Bay a short walk away. Follow the river through the village to the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, built to transport coal and iron inland from the coast, now a popular tourist attraction where the trains take you through scenic countryside to Lakeside, at the south end of Lake Windermere and a boat journey on to bustling Bowness-on-Windermere.
