This cottage is situated on the edge of a forest ravine in Thornthwaite near Keswick and is light and airy throughout with Velux windows on the upper floors. There are two bedrooms and a pleasant sitting room with a wood burner for the colder nights. Two sets of patio doors open to the pleasant veranda that overlooks the forest ravine and tumbling beck. Thornthwaite is a quiet hamlet on the edge of Whinlatter Forest, close to Braithwaite and Bassenthwaite Lake. Thornthwaite boasts a popular gallery and tearoom. Whinlatter Forest draws thrill seekers to the Go Ape hire wire activity course, and the Altura mountain bike trails. You can also enjoy walks to the quiet summits of Lords Seat, Barf and Broom Fell. Nearby Braithwaite has three pubs all serving excellent food. For something a bit special try the Cottage in the Wood on the Whinlatter Pass. Keswick is a 10-minute drive from the property offering a wide selection of pubs, restaurants and shops. Keswick also boasts a cinema and the Theatre by the Lake. The cottage is accessed via the a path along the side of the cottage. The entrance door opens into a small hallway, off which is the kitchen/diner. The contemporary kitchen has patio doors opening onto the veranda, a lovely place to sit out and enjoy the impressive ravine on the edge of Whinlatter Forest. The kitchen is well equipped with electric cooker and electric hob, fridge/freezer, slimline dishwasher, washer/drier, table and chairs and wall mounted TV. There is a separate sitting room, also with patio doors to the veranda, which has comfortable seating, a TV and DVD player and a cosy wood burner (initial supply of fuel provided). Outside on the veranda there is a barrier all the way round - please note there is a steep drop to the garden and children should be supervised at all times. Stairs from the living room lead to the first floor with a double bedroom overlooking the forest and river at the rear. Adjacent to the bedroom is the newly fitted bathroom with a velux window and bath with rain head shower over, WC and wash basin.Further stairs lead to the twin bedroom which benefits from large Velux windows that fill the room with light and offer superb views to the forest. Please note there is restricted head room above the beds. Outside there are steps down to the garden which overlooks the river and forest. Please note that although very picturesque there is an unfenced drop to the river. Also the river is often fast flowing and may not be suitable for younger children. The veranda provides a lovely sitting out area where you can enjoy the secluded setting and watch the local wildlife and there is a further lower sitting out level with wooden table and bench. There are views through the trees to the Skiddaw range. There is a wood store in the garden and you can also lock your bikes away in here should you need to. Private parking for two cars is on the gravelled area by the cottage.

Partly refurbished in early 2020, this characterful holiday home is tucked away on a quiet lane in the village of Thornthwaite. Surrounded by forest with glimpses of Skiddaw, it is a peaceful escape from everyday life. With three bedrooms sleeping five people upstairs and a comfortable living room downstairs plus an additional snug there is plenty of room for a family or two couples to spend time together whilst also having their own space. The enclosed, west facing front garden has chairs and a table from where you can enjoy the sun later in the day. Full of character and a little bit quirky, the property invites you to come in and make yourself at home. Thornthwaite is a small village that is close - but not too close! - to the A66 and so benefits from great transport links. The property is tucked away at the edge of the village right at the foot of Whinlatter Forest, which stretches for miles and offers some great walking and off-road cycling. Braithwaite is just 2 miles away with a choice of pubs and a shop. Otherwise, carry on a little further and visit the vibrant town of Keswick with shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants galore plus numerous picturesque walks, beautiful Derwentwater and a couple of museums. Keswick is also home to the Theatre by the Lake offering a wide mix of shows and events throughout the year at a purpose-built theatre. Should you feel the need to explore further afield, the Georgian market town of Cockermouth is just a 15-minute drive away with a good range of independent shops and eateries plus a couple of supermarkets and Wordsworth's childhood home. Explore Bassenthwaite Lake, one of the lesser known lakes and home to one of the pairs of Lake District ospreys, indulge yourself with a tour at the Lakes Distillery, or have an afternoon in the spa at Armathwaite. Beautiful Buttermere is just the other side of Newlands Pass and all the northern and western fells are yours for the walking. The Solway coast, Eden Valley, Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall country are also very accessible. The property is a lovely combination of a comfortable and charming house in a quiet location which is still within easy reach of everything going on in the area. Enter through the front gate into the enclosed front garden and down the path to the front door, inside is a small hallway with coat hooks above the radiator and the stairs leading up ahead. Turn to the right into the main living room with cosy log burning stove. Two 2-seat sofas face the Smart TV with DVD player. There is also a Samsung Bluetooth speaker in the living room, which you can connect your smartphone to. The two big sash windows look over the front garden to the trees beyond and bring in plenty of light. Side tables with lamps are handily placed for holding a cuppa while you put your feet up and relax. The living room is semi-open plan with the dining table seating 5 sitting in the archway between the living room and the galley kitchen. The window looks out to the back of the house and off to the left is a handy downstairs cloakroom with toilet and sink. On the right of the dining area the well equipped galley style kitchen is on 2 levels with a step between them, on the lower level the cooking area includes electric oven and hob, microwave, toaster and plenty of storage space. On the higher level at the back is a large fridge, dishwasher, belfast sink with tiled splashback and a washer dryer. A door leads out of the end of the kitchen to the side of the house with access back into the front garden. Linking the upper part of the kitchen back through into the main living room is the cosy snug. Set up with 2 armchairs , a beanbag and a Smart TV (please note, this TV doesn't have Freeview channels) with a wii this is could be a living space just for the children or ideal if there are any differences in opinion over the tv remote! The large window looks out over the front garden making this a lovely bright room. There is a step down back into the main living room. Head up the carpeted stairs and there is a long hallway right along the back of the house, it is the windows here that just give a glimpse of the Skiddaw group of fells through the trees. Right at the end of the hallway is the family bathroom with a shower over the bath and a towel rail over the radiator for snuggly warm towels regardless of whether you've enjoyed a quick blast in the shower or a long soak in the bath. Back to the top of the stairs and the first bedroom on the right is a cosy double with a window looking over the village houses to the woods rising up the hillside beyond. Everything you need is here with bedside tables, chest of drawers, wardrobe, chair, a mirror on the wall and a soft warm rug on the varnished floorboards. Next along is the biggest bedroom with king-size bed, bedside tables, chest of drawers, wardrobe, mirror and chair. There are rugs and a similar tranquil view to the other bedrooms, open the window and the soundtrack will be dominated by birdsong. The final bedroom at the end of the landing next to the bathroom is a single with bedside table and a wardrobe with drawers beneath, this room also has a rug and a mirror and a lovely view up the wooded valley with cottages lining the lane. Outside the enclosed front garden is mostly laid to slate chip and paving with a flower bed and some tubs to add colour and greenery. There is a table and chairs for enjoying some fresh mountain air, peace and quiet and the views of the surrounding woodlands.

Thornthwaite village has its own art gallery and cafe just across the road from the cottage with a wide range of local art for sale and a delicious slice of cake or two for the less artistically inclined. While the neighbouring village of Braithwaite, just over a mile away, has three pubs and is on a very handy bus route back to Thornthwaite. The cottage is also perfectly placed to make the most of the history and culture of the area with Cockermouth, the delightful Georgian town which was Wordsworth's birthplace just 15 minutes away. While Mirehouse, a beautiful stately home with an abundance of literary links and gorgeous gardens, lies just the other side of Bassenthwaite Lake. Keswick also offers many cultural delights with its own art deco cinema showing mainstream and independent films while the beautifully situated Theatre by the Lake has a varied programme of drama, music and comedy throughout the year. Whether you choose to fill your visit with history, culture, outdoor pursuits or just relaxation in lovely surroundings then this cottage makes an ideal base. On arrival at the house, guests enter via the rear door. Here there is a large porch with space for muddy boots. From here you progress through to the light, airy kitchen/diner with wonderful views of Skiddaw in the distance. It's well-equipped with double oven and ceramic hobs, a slimline dishwasher, microwave, and a built-in fridge/freezer. There's a wooden dining table for six and a Bose stereo for a spot of ambient dining music. Through to the main hallway from which you access the bedrooms, bathroom and lovely living room. With a deep comfy sofa and armchairs arranged around the open fire with green slate fireplace and large curved screen Smart TV with Freeview, it makes a gorgeous place to relax. What makes it extra special is the two large windows which, as well as drenching the room in light, also take in the sweeping grandeur of the mountain views. The master bedroom on this floor has a king-size wooden bedframe, a triple wardrobe and dresser. It also benefits from that glorious view to the front of the house. The comfortable twin room looks out to the rear of the house and has a wardrobe and chest of drawers. The family bathroom is also on this floor with an electric shower over the bath. The cottage's third bedroom suite is a fantastic flexible space. Accessible either from the main hallway, via a stairgated hatch and a steep ladder-style staircase (please note this may be unsuitable for guests with limited mobility), or from outside the house through its own French doors. It's an ideal space whether your party has teens who'd like their own space or grandparents who'd enjoy some peace and quiet. The spacious bedroom has a wooden king-size bedframe, built-in wardrobes, chest of drawers and yet more of those mountain views. Off the bedroom there's an en-suite shower room with mixer shower. The suite also benefits from a lovely downstairs snug, it has a comfy two seater sofa, a desk and a TV. The utility room is beyond the snug where there is a washing machine and tumble dryer. Moving outside, the cottage benefits from a delightful mature garden with lawns, outdoor seating and dining furniture. Absolutely perfect for making the most of sunny days and outdoor dining opportunities. There is parking for at least two cars on the gated driveway with space for a further car outside the gateway.

You might not want to move beyond this gorgeous room with its cosy red Aga and glorious views but just to the side of it is a delightful little light snug with a chaise longue for some quiet reading time. Here there are binoculars for watching the amazing birdlife. Not only does the lodge play host to a wide range of garden birds, but you might also be lucky enough to spot our beloved red squirrels and some of Bassenthwaite's other occasional residents, the mighty osprey. This really is a fantastic spot to take in the amazing views over to Keswick, Latrigg and Skiddaw. Moving through the lower floor, which has beautiful slate flooring throughout, you'll come to the large and comfortable living room. At its centre is a stunning wood burner for cosy evenings in and it also has plenty of comfy seating and a DVD player. Moving up to the first floor, the master bedroom has a king-size bed, a dresser and a wardrobe. Next to this room there is also a convenient shower room. The twin room benefits from that stunning view over Bassenthwaite and a wardrobe under the eaves that makes a perfect den for little ones! The third room is a double and once Again has those stunning views. Like the other bedrooms it is beautifully decorated and has a calm and luxurious quality about it. The spacious, modern family bathroom has a lovely 'd' bath with shower over the bath. Outside the property there is parking for up to three cars, lockable bike storage and the area to the front has a lovely terrace for outdoor dining or just for taking in that magnificent view. Out the back of the property there are 2 acres of hillside garden, leading to open woodland. This is a truly magical place to explore as not only do you have your own partially enclosed garden with a tree swing but then there is your own private wood to have wild adventures and mini beast hunts. The garden and woodland are a haven for wildlife including slow worms, hedgehogs, bank voles, red leg partridges,siskins, nut hatches, tawny owls and more. Added to this, you can also access the forestry tracks that lead in to Whinlatter forest where there is a wealth of walking and mountain biking literally out of the back door. What a perfect cottage to make the most of this fantastic area.
