About Vanguard
This attractive cottage on the Whitby Lighthouse site has sitting room, kitchen/dining room, double bedroom, twin bedroom, single bedroom, bathroom and shower room. Features include oil central heating, electric wood burner, electric hob and oven.Vanguard is one of two holiday cottages available at the lighthouse, which lies on the East Coast just outside Whitby and close to the North Yorkshire Moors. Also on this site is Galatea, sleeping five guests.
The High Cliffs of the North Yorkshire coast hide a number of small ports, the most significant of which is Whitby. Captain James Cook was apprenticed to a Whitby shipowner and made the first of his voyages of discovery (1768-1771) in a covered Whitby built 'cat' - a small ship rigged collier renamed 'Endeavour'. Whitby's skyline is dominated by the ruins of St. Hilda's Abbey, high on Whitby's East Cliff and spreading below, a maze of alleyways and narrow streets running down to the busy quayside and harbour entrance. To the south lie the coastal villages and resorts of Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington. Inland lie the heather moorlands of the North Yorkshire Moors and, further afield, York.
Additional Information:
Children and infants welcome. Travel cot and highchair available on request.
Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome (small additional charge). Dog owners, please be aware, although the garden is mostly walled or fenced, it is not entirely dog proof for determined pets!
There is no WiFi available at Vanguard and very limited mobile signal. A telephone with honesty box is provided.
There is an internal step within the property.
Guests should be aware that the lighthouses and equipment need regular and sometimes emergency maintenance. Therefore visits by maintenance staff may occur at any time during the year. However, staff will do their best to ensure guest privacy at all times.
Guests are reminded they are renting a heritage building, therefore certain features such as steps, stairs and floor levels may not comply with that of a modern building. As such, we would advise guests to acquaint themselves with the premises on arrival and exercise caution accordingly.
Access roads to the lighthouse site are narrow with limited passing places and, dependent on the season and site, there is the possibility of overhanging vegetation due to cutting restrictions during bird breeding seasons or other environmental reasons.
Sorry, no barbecues, fireworks, drones or remote controlled flying equipment permitted.
Drivers with low axles should be aware that the site is approached via a farm track.
Sorry, charging of an electric car is not permitted.
