About Pentyrch

Pentyrch is a village and community on the western edge of Cardiff, set in the green belt where the city's suburbs give way to open Welsh countryside. The community takes its name from the village itself and stretches to take in the neighbouring villages of Creigiau and Gwaelod y Garth, with locals known as Pentyrchians.

For visitors, Pentyrch is a quieter, semi-rural base for exploring the Welsh capital: ten minutes from the city centre by car, it offers a village-pub-and-walking-country feel without losing touch with everything Cardiff has to offer. The nearby villages of Radyr and Saint Fagans are an easy onward drive for anyone wanting to extend the day out.

Things to Do Outside

The pick of the outdoors in Pentyrch sits at the heart of the village. Pentyrch Park, on the corner by the war memorial on Heol Goch, is a small, neatly kept community park that doubles up as a quiet picnic spot and a starting point for short walks into the surrounding lanes and fields. From there, the country roads west and north climb gently towards the Garth, the wooded hill that rises behind the village, popular with local dog walkers and a familiar landmark to anyone who's seen the Cardiff skyline from the M4.

Pentyrch sits in Cardiff's green belt, so a holiday cottage here gives easy access to plenty of low-key country walking on top of whatever the village itself offers.

Pubs

Pentyrch has two long-standing village pubs, both within a few minutes' walk of each other in the heart of the village.

The Kings Arms on Church Road is a snug longhouse inn with lime-washed stone walls and old timber beams, pouring cask ales alongside a Modern British menu. It's the smarter dinner-out option of the two and consistently the village's busiest spot. A short walk away on Heol Goch, the Lewis Arms is the down-to-earth family-friendly local under new management since July 2025: Sunday lunch from noon to four, a beer garden, pool table, dart board and regular entertainment, with a free car park and free Wi-Fi. It's also dog-friendly, which is worth knowing if you're staying at one of our dog-friendly holiday cottages in Pentyrch.

Restaurants

Pentyrch's eating-out scene is small, and most evenings the village pubs cover the bases. For something a bit different, Bbq Deals on Temperance Court does barbecue takeaway and food, a useful option if you fancy a change from pub fare without driving into Cardiff.

For a wider choice of restaurants, the city centre is a short drive away, with everything from neighbourhood bistros around Pontcanna to the bigger-name places along St Mary Street.
